| No money for heritage conservation says SGPC |

In the recently passed Rs 330-crore ($76million) budget of the cash-rich Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, not even a penny has been earmarked for preservation and conservation of historic gurdwaras, Sikh art and creating awareness about heritage buildings. Angered by this, conservationists, artistes and social workers feel that the religious body managing gurdwaras in northern India must set up a heritage cell so that the history can be preserved and documented. The artistes feel that the biggest danger to the Sikh art— comprising paintings, murals and frescoes decorating walls of the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple— is from its custodian, the SGPC. Recently, the SGPC came under condemnation for damaging heritage in the name of ‘kar sewa’ at various gurdwaras as murals were painted white, paintings destroyed and traditional Nanakshahi bricks were replaced with marble and shining stones. “They (SGPC) and kar sewa babas have done more harm to the buildings than anyone else. The murals and frescoes at the Golden Temple are peeling off and the restoration at some sections has been improperly done, without taking care of the originality,” rued state convener of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Dr Sukhdev Singh. He said the SGPC should realise the significance of historic buildings and art work and set up a heritage wing with experts on panels.
Bedi said the heritage wing should work as an advisory body to the staff and be consulted while restoring the art work. Renowned artist Satpal Danish, whose forefathers were entrusted with the task of doing art work on the walls of the Darbar Sahib, said, “In the utmost disgrace, glazed tiles were fixed on the ground floor of Gurdwara Baba Atal, situated in close proximity of the Golden Temple. We have been raising the voice against the damage being caused to the historic buildings, but there is no one to listen,” he said. “Many of the devotees and pilgrims are ignorant about the great artistic treasure. The paintings on the walls depict the ‘janamsakhis’ of Guru Nanak Dev and other Gurus,” said Dr Sukhdev, adding that even the books and documents at Sikh Reference Library inside the Golden Temple complex were not being preserved professionally. Some renovation of the upper domes and walls at the Golden Temple was carried out by INTACH a few years back, but the work was stopped by the SGPC without giving reasons. UK-based Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewa Jatha also carried out repairs, but the original craftsmanship was not preserved though the members claimed to have preserved the heritage. Art historians and critics said the SGPC employees were not aware of the importance of the heritage of gurdwaras. “When the Akal Takht was re-built after Operation Bluestar in 1984, the art was hit the most. Instead of preserving, the rich murals and frescoes were devastated,” alleged Brij Bedi, a social worker. “It’s a pain to see the rich heritage ruining. There is no one to stop the process,” he said.

Sadh Sangat ji what ever money or material seva you do make sure its is properly channelized. SGPC is a perfect example of poor money managment , Not a single penny has ever been used for maintaining historical sites , but millions have been spent on putting Gold domes. I think Sikhs need to wake up insure that Sikh leaders work for preserving Sikh culture ,Scripts, Monuments. | SGPC seems to want us to give more money for the preservation and like $2000 will go towards the purpose and the rest will line some peoples pockets. My dasvand actually goes to the poor(I donate dasvand into poor peoples hands)(I do give to the golek but I dont know if "ALL" of it is used for correct purposes) because I dont trust money in the hands of any masand, and in Kaljug the masands and the leaders are hard to tell apart from eachother. Next they will say we have 1 billion dollar budget and we need more money to properly run the org. but they take the money and run from the org. should the panth takeover sewa and have the money that went to repairs be given in another area of choice from the "Panth" and not corrupt money hiding/spending leaders. |

| Possibly the problem is that no one is monitoring the activities of SGPC members. There jobs and salary's seem to be secure, wether they produce results or not. Like in other areas, the membership is possibly based on who you know rather than what you know. Preservation of the Sikh Heritage will only take place, when we have SGPC members who truly love Sikhism and the Sikh Heritage. While no one likes to see the Kohinoor Diamond and Historical Manuscripts relating to Sikh history in the hands of the British. There is one consolation, no one in India would have preserved these valueable articles for such a long period like the British Museums have done so. Also if the Sikh treasures weren't burnt or destroyed in 1984, they were possibly looted. This is how much respect was shown to the Sikh Heritage at that time. It is upto the Sikhs to preserve there own roots. All we need is SIKHS with right interests, in the right posts. So, preservation NOT renovation of historical buildings is a must. |

Where there's abundance of money,it attracts goons. Look, one of the big names in Akali dal was J.S. Talwandi. He was well known smuggler of opium in Ludhiana area. Fact is, opium is know as Talwandi there. Previous female president is murdrer of her own daughter's baby. She did that by rolling wooden pin on her daughter's belly because she married out of their catse. Do we need more proof? I've been in persuit of a change in organizational structures for many years, i'm not just talking about SGPC here. In 2000, I was visiting India and went to Darbar Sahib for darshan. When I came out of the compound, i saw a book shop run by SGPC. I went and asked for a copy of SGPC's constitution. I was told it is not under publication. You can visit all the shops in Amritsar, no one has ever written about inherited faults in it's constitution. How can you change something if you don't even know what defines it. Sorry, I spilled lots of beans. But it is the truth and it should hurt every sikh. May be some solutions will comes out of it. |

Its common now to hear about physical fights taken place in Gurdwareh infront of Guru Granth Sahib ji maharaj. i was on u-tube the other day and theres so much about beadbi in Gurdwareh even showing clip of physical fight where someone runs at the speaker and a fight starts during the Darbar being openly held. its all down to MONEY! the Gurdwara sahib received thousands of pounds a week. this is Guru jis blessing through the Satsangat. but has anyone asked where this money is going? is it used for Sikhi parchar? is it going to feed the hungry? is it going to clothe the naked? how much goes to charity? In Guru Gobind Singhs time money given went to such good use to protect, feed, help and needy. now its straight into bank accounts never to be seen again until you here someone in the committee was found to be stealing it or using it for private means. this daas has a Golak at home and every time its emptied it goes to a charity, mainly "Pingalwara Society". As khalsa said above, Guru ji wants your love, not your money. but hay, its easier to give a couple of quid and go home, then to spend time doing sewa. Money is VITAL for any community to flourish, but only if its used correctly.. by feeding money to these committee's, we are doing so much damage to our faith. Divided we fall, united we stand strong. Where theres honey theyll be bee's to make it, look after it and protect it, but the sweetest of honey unfortunately also attracts incests which of some will just use it to feed themself, or distroy it. o' Brothers and Sisters, what shall we do? |

Guess what, no one comes to read or borrow them. So, I started giving money to working poor I know in india. I put there kids through school. Well the main reason for all the pain and suffering faced by the sikh religion is very poor and selfish leadership with mr. badal playing a major role in it. Funds shouild also be allotted to sikh educational organizations for promotion of the sikhism and its preaching. Schlorships should provided to the deserving poor sikh students for achieving decent education. SGPC should not spend any money for supporting sikh greedy and selffish politicions. It is shame, inspite of having such a huge amount of money available with SGPC, they doing not doing much to further the education and dispersing the information on sikhism in India and as well in the world. May WAHEGURU help us everywhere. whenever we as sachay sikh need your help, please do assist us!! help all who need your help and are unintensionally drifting off onto other paths and forgetting the true path which has been made for us by those brave sikh men and women nad our gurus who lay their lifes down to upkeep the dignity of Sikhi and our Gurdwara's. who were tied and rotated on wheels, who had their scalps removed, cut by saws, flayed alive just for us people who now live happy and peiceful lifes!
