The federal government has cancelled the notification issued on February 23, regarding transfer of ownership, administration and management of 150 historical sites in Punjab from the federal government to the Punjab government, an official handout stated on Monday. Earlier, these sites had been transferred from the Federal Archaeology Department (FAD) to the Punjab Archaeology Department (PAD).
Many sites had been encroached upon which had been looked after by FAD. The proposal in the connection had pointed out that the provincial government would be the best custodian of its cultural heritage. The Punjab government had been discussing the issue with the federal government since 1984. On June 2, 2001, General Pervez Musharraf issued a directive through the federal culture secretary that all historical sites be handed over to the provincial governments. In January 2007, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered the removal of encroachments from the archaeological sites in Punjab and directed the FAD to hand those monuments over to the PAD. staff report. |
