Interacting with members of these clubs, Kalha said as the clubs occupied a major portion of area in the garden, which is related to Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s heritage, they were creating obstacles in the ongoing conservation work. “Let some alternative arrangement be made for the clubs,” she said while addressing a gathering of club members, comprising mainly the financially and politically-influential persons. Asserting that the Centre had sanctioned Rs 200 crore to conserve the Holy City’s heritage and promote it as a tourist place, Kalha said the key factors of the conservation plan included the heritage of the Golden Temple and the legacy of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Kalha said as far as the Maharaja’s heritage is concerned, a survey of the historic Gobindgarh Fort has been conducted and Rs 10 crore have been sanctioned for its conservation. She added that the estimated cost of the project was Rs 50 crore, while Rs 6 crore had been set aside for the heritage outside the fort, which includes the Ram Bagh Gate and other edifices. “The work on conservation of the Company Garden, the only Persian Garden left in the country, will begin in July,” she said. Veteran CPI leader Satya Pal Dang, terming these clubs as places of enjoyment and pleasure for the rich, also said that these should go. | ||||||

| Very welcome decision. I was quite surprised to see a club there when i visited the company bagh and wonder who actually allowed this in the first place. Theres also been encroachment on the bagh by a tennis club having various tennis courts at one end. At another end theres an apparently unused kids playground and min zoo. In between the tennis courts and playground there's a 'mini-village comprising 4/5 dwellings' of some no-too well off people. Only the northern parts of the bagh garden are maintained and none of the fountains/water features work. So most of the bagh really needs a good looking at. |
