Practical steps to save the Built Heritage of Hazur Sahib PDF Print E-mail
Written by Amandeep Madra
Thursday, 04 January 2007

In plans frighteningly reminiscent of the Galiara or "beautification" plan around the Durbar Sahib in Amritsar that wiped out all the bungas, birthplaces of the Gurus and ancient buildings in Amritsar a similar plan is being implemented right now around Hazur Sahib, Nanded.

These scandalous plan are implemented by the Gurdwara and State board in preparation for the 2008 commemorations of the Guruship of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and therefore a major event is planned in the town of Nanded when hundreds of thousands of pilgrims are expected to come to Sri Hazur Sahib.

The result though is the steady demolition, destruction and vulgarisation of the unique Sikh heritage of the region. The Galiara plan in Hazur Sahib will bulldoze a number of important heritage sites and bury under concrete the sacred space where the tenth Guru once lived, meditated, wrote, ministered and passed away.

Behind this deplorable scheme are the Gurdwara Board who are intent on cashing in on the celebrations by constructing massive austere pilgrim hostels at the expense of sensitive and ancient built heritage.

Punjabheritage.org is coordinating a campaign to lobby the authorities to stop this destruction. We are requesting that all readers assist us by following the steps below.

Practical steps to save the sacred heritage of Hazur Sahib

Please leave your comments on the message below. These messages will be used to petition the Prime Minister of India, The Planning Commission, Dr Pasricha (below), Shri Mopalwar (below) and others

Please do call and email/SMS the following individuals. At all times please keep communications polite and to the point and express your deep concerns about the loss of these heritage sites. Explain that visitors to Hazur Sahib from abroad want to have these buildings conserved and not destroyed. Urge them to adopt the conservation plans that have been laid out by conservation professionals.

Pictured (left) is Dr. Parvinder Singh Pasricha - the chairman of the Prashasak ("logistics/arrangements") Committee for the 2008 event and also a DGP (Director General of Police) in Maharashtra . Please call/SMS Dr Pasricha and make your concerns known to him. His mobile number is +91 9820186050

Please take all necessary administrative actions to preserve this important piece of our history. Please do not allow the Gurudwara board to demolish these important buildings. Celebration/commeration that destroys the preserved history is actually against the spirit of establishment of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji in 1708 at Nanded. People will not remember the celebration/commeration few years down the line, but these buildings have stood for over 250 years reminding us of glorious past. Instead, we should focus on preserving these buildings with modern archeological techniques.

Praying to preserve these buildings.

  Dear Mr. Pasricha:

Sat Sri Akal. Please preserve this important past of ours and let our future generations nourish this glorious buildings and history. Other religions like Christianity strive every single day to find a single thing that links it directly to Jesus Christ. We Sikhs have been lucky enough to not only have the original writings of our revered Gurus, but also belongings that remind us of these glorious days. Please Mr. Pasricha, I beg you to stop this destruction and use modern methods to preseve and beautify the surroundings.

  Dear Dr Pasricha,

The planned demolition of part of the historic architecture of Hazur Sahib is nothing short of a desecration of our heritage. Despite the relentless efforts of a few dedicated individuals we continue to witness the systematic dismantling of our most sacred sites. We must take lessons from more ancient cultures than ours, of the benefits of preservation through conservative methodologies. If the destructive approach suggested here had been taken by other cultures our generation would never have seen the ancient wonders of the Aztec temple, The Colosseum, The Throne Hall of Persepolis, Stonehenge or even the Great Inca city to name a few. Sikh heritage sites should be treated with the utmost respect and not vandalized by tasteless modernisation.

Dr Pasricha I sincerely urge you to make every effort to avert the proposed demolition.

It continues to astonish me that we continue to push ahead with the 'modernisation' of our sikh temples and places of significance without recognising the value and importance of the historical buildings and architecture, that new whitewashed buildings continue to be preferred to centuries old buildings that preserve the legacy of our forefathers. It is precisely these old buildings with their unique atmosphere which add to the cultural experience one feels when entering a holy complex such as that at Nanded, that feeling of stepping back into a time when some of the great sikh heroes still walked the earth.

I appreciate the need to make arrangements to accomodate the many pilgrims that may be expected in 2008, but surely other logistical means can be found without having to damage our sacred buildings. I implore you to please investigate all other alternative provisions that do not impinge on the character or history of Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib.

India had been taking pride in preserving her historical monuments. We had been sharing the glory of our past with our children by refering to these monuments. Unfortunately the present trend seems to feel ashamed of our past and we are destroying our precious monuments in the name of so called progress. The progress does not come about through destruction but preservation.
We have to make a choice at this point in time. Do we want to leave our children with a rich and unparallel heritage intact or give them the bogus copy of the West and make them fell ashamed of us who are destroying their pride possession?
Choice is ours - SHAME or PRIDE ?
I humbly beg all administrative authorities involved in the Hazoor Sahib Project not to destroy any existing historical monuments. There is a superficial progress and there is a progress we can be proud of. Work towards the latter.

Mr. Mopalwar I was surprised to see our historical buildings being destroyed under the disguise of modernisation in Hazur Sahib Nanded which falls under your jurisdiction. Sikhs have many prominent and historical sites in Pakistan and India. Pakistan being very cooperative in preserving our sacred sites, India remains to be seen in this regard. Considering the holliness of the places, any demolition around and within the Sikh shrines in South Inidia should cease forthwith. Sikhs all over the world are looking forward to the policy of the Indian government towards to protection and preservation of historical monuments of the minorites, specially the Sikhs in India.

Your efforts to stop carnage of our historical sites in Nanded Sahib is greatly appreciated.

May Waheguru Bless the whole universe!

A few years back, we went to Philadelphia and among other places, visited Betsy Ross house. Betsy Ross was the lady who is credited with coming up with the American Flag. Even though the house is over 250 years old but it is very well maintained. The authorities "owning" the site has kept up with the times by modernizing it but at the same time they have maintained its historical integrity. Once inside the house, you get the feeling that you are still living in Ms. Ross’s era.

Unfortunately, the same spirit of maintaining our heritage is not prevalent in India. But this is some thing that we need to change. We have such a rich history and we owe to ourselves and future generations its upkeep. I request that a careful thought is given when it comes to changing any of the historical structures at Hazoor Sahib. Please make sure that modernization does not come at the expense of our heritage.

I am dismayed at hearing about the disregard for conservation of sites associated with
Guru Gobind Singh.

For nearly thirty years I have been studying and writing about Sikhism and my first visit to Nanded is planned for 2007. India's (and especially Maharashtra's and Punjab's) increasing economic strength must be matched by appropriate attention to preserving historical sites. These matter to Sikh pilgrims and to historians and need to be conserved too for future generations with a view to the increasing market in cultural tourism. There need
be no conflict between modernising and respecting/protecting historical and spiritual heritage.

Since seeing the many sites associated with Guru Nanak's birthplace in Pakistan this year I have been encouraging people to visit. It will be very sad indeed if sites in India where Guru Gobind Singh spent his last days are damaged and destroyed.

...to think our own Sikh brother Parvinder Singh Pasricha to agree with the demolition is a disgrace to him being a Sikh. He and his Sikh colleagues need to remember that they were created by Dasam Pita Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj in 1699 when he created the Sikhs - a fearless, prestigious, wise and unselfish warrior race. Unfortunately a small percentage of this race is corrupted and contaminated with evil and selfishness and this is evident through history: Sikhs loosing Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Sikh Empire, Sikhs being killed by Sikhs themselves, those who were supposed to protect them (1984) and so on.

Destroying the HOME of our 10th Guru, who is our ‘Father’, is no less than destroying the home of one's own parents. Those who will resort to this despicable act, despite the plea from the Sikhs and others worldwide, will face terrible fate and destruction themselves in their own lives.

I hope the authorities come into their senses and realise what they are about to do is not correct in humanity, historically and morally or they will add their names in the Sikh history as 'Gadhars'. Our Gurus and Sikhs have sacrificed their lives to give us Sikhism and this heritage which the world respects and acknowledges. It is the duty and the responsibility of the Sikhs and especially of the Director General of Police Dr. Parvinder Singh Pasricha - the chairman of the Prashasak ("logistics/arrangements") Committee for the 2008 event, if he prides himself as a true Sikh, to protect and preserve this heritage.

I challenge Dr. Parvinder Singh Pasricha to stand up the Sikh values and oppose this demolition to gain his respect from all Sikhs and others worldwide.

We must remember that we currently have these beautiful Gurdwara today as a direct result of efforts of those Guru's that now we're seeming to ignore. To destroy the very places that they graced and areas that are equally of huge importance within Sikhi is deplorable. History is all the more believable if people can visit the areas in their natural state and not some area which has been through a commercial excercise to reap financial gain. Has anybody considered that in due course the desire for people to visit will equally decline as commercialisation takes a grip? It will be ironic if commercialisation becomes the underlying reason which destroys the intended tourist trade and subsequent financial gain.

The stories our parents tell us become real when we visit India and see with our own eyes where the stories took place. Future Sikh generations need this realization too.
Sikhs may be minority in India, but many live around the world. We have grown and are not so small any more that our rights and wishes be ignored. Leave the sites and build your precious money making builiding elsewhere.

Thank you for any steps taken to preserve this great place.

A sikh is recognised by his/hers uniform (eg 5ks, pagri) that our tenth guru has granted us, these buildings also play an important role in recognition of sikhism!!!. They are a constant reminder to us sikhs that our sikhi is still alive, ke sade guru sade ang sang hain - THEY STILL LIVE!!!. Please dont take this away from us.

All those historic buildings are important part of sikhism, our coming generation must know where our guru lived ,meditated prayed and fought ,in what circumstances they fought to give us freedom of religion. Do we show our children these modern building as place of our Guruji..... ? ? Heritage whether architectural or cultural must be saved for generations to come to tell our children proudly that these are sacred places where Guruji gave his declaration " sab sikhan ko hukum hai Guru manyo Granth " waheGuru ji ki Fateh

I am extremely hurt to know that one of the most sacred places in India as well as to the entire sikh community is being destroyed.
We as Sikhs should learn to preserve our heritage and not destroy it. Doing so can cause an uproar amongst us.

Waheguru ji ka khalsa, waheguru ji ki fateh!

We have to do something in order to save our religious places. If we let these people distroy our history then how do we expect our future generations to understand sikhism? Do you even realize how white people get excited when they find out little thing about their history? We have/know everything about our history and we're distroying it...what for? Some stupid buildings? Are we really ready to give up everything for that? Our Guru ji didn't give up on us...but now we're giving up on our guru ji? that's not right...please do something to stop this madness.

sat sri akal. May Waheguru bless us all!

Please do whatever it takes to preserve this. Sikh history is an important part of the subcontinent's history and everyone will lose if this plan goes as proceeded. So much history is already lost as it is, and preserving what little is left is a way to maintain it.

Dear Parvinder Singh Pasricha,

Waheguru has appointed you as the chairman of the Prashasak Committee for the 2008 event to serve Sikh Sangat.
It is humble request to preserve sacred heritage of Hazur Sahib. If sacred heritage of Hazur Sahib is not preserved then Sikh sangat will remember you as another betral of sikh panth and you need to give answer to Guru Gobind Singh Ji world hereafter.

To destroy such heritage sites, is to destroy evidence of history. To destroy evidence of history allows for uncertainty and ability to fabricate new history. Fabricating new history allows to change the course of the future. Destroying such buildings, and historical relics affects the psyche and pride of the people. Destroying such pride and psyche of the people ultimately destroys the productivity of the nation. Let's take pride on the documented history on which the nation is built on.

  Dear Sir.

I am extremely disheartened to hear that part of the Punjabi/Sikh heritage within the precincts of the gurdwara complex at Nanded is under threat.

As I am sure you are well aware, the history of Nanded is shared to a great extent with the history of the Gurdwara complex, and the various buildings that are currently under threat, including the Ramgarhia Bungas, are extremely rare examples of Sikh/Punjabi architecture in central India.

Such buildings are priceless, and once lost can never be retrieved. Many other buildings have been demolished in similar circumstances over the past few decades. Now is the time to prevent the loss of history which may not be regretted by yourself, but is likely to be considered a great shame by generations to come.

I hope that you are able to find alternative plans which will prevent the loss of these unique structures.

Yours sincerely,

Jasvir Singh Degun

Please do not destroy a very important part of our history. its bad enough that we Sikhs are a minority, do not stamp on our pride by taking away something that is really valuable to us. loads of precious Sikh artifacts have already been distroyed and stolen. This is physiologically damaging to us. It is depressing to many of us just thinking about it. Our future children have a right to visit priceless places to learn about where they come from. India would be raped by muslims if it wasnt for our courageous Sikh leaders. Bring out the good in you and save whats important.

The care of gurdwaras belongs to the panth and no one else. The state has no right to do this, all decisions like this must be made by the panth. Therefore this demolition should be stopped at all costs.

It is precisely these old buildings with their unique atmosphere which add to the cultural experience one feels when entering a holy complex such as that at Nanded, that feeling of stepping back into a time when some of the great sikh heroes still walked the earth.
