Save the Ramgharia Bunga from destruction PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 12 December 2006

Reports are coming in from India that the historic Ramgharia Bunga in Hazur Sahib, Nanded is slated to be pulled down. This historical site linked to the Ramgharia Misl is one of the last of the great buildings related to Ranjit Singh in the region. It pre-dates the takht and was constructed with funds from the Ramgharia Sardars at Ranjit Singh's court to act as a place of safety and rest for visiting pilgrims.

This historical site, with Ranjit Singh's own Baradari, is now in grave threat of being torn down, despite the wishes of the local community,  sevadars and the Sikh clergy.

These priceless Sikh buildings which have witnessed 150 years of history and are some of India's last surviving examples of Sikh architecture from the period of Sikh rule from Lahore are to be sacrificed to make way for modern buildings by a Sikh committee charged with making arrangements for the 2008 commemorations in Nanded.

Please help us save these priceless buildings from destruction by adding your comments to this story which we will press upon Dr D. S. Pasricha chairman of the Prashasak ("logistics/arrangements") Committee for the 2008 event.

  Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa,
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh,
i'm a 12 year old kid from detroit michigan usa. I've only been to Hazur Sahib and visited the bunga once when i was 9. I really dont remember it. but like roshi Kaur said " i already feel that kids are forgetting their heritage ". Why are we tearing down our history. This is a very historical monument. Tearing this down is like tearing a page out of a good book and throwing it in the trash. Why do that ? Isn't our history, our roots more important? If we tear that down our present, the fruit will be destroyed. Thats like building a scafle and taking off the bottom where it stands on. The top part wont just stand there. It will come down. Like I said I'm also a 12 year-old. I live in Detroit, MI USA. Please save this bunga. Its a monument!

If they do not understand these things, they are the wrong people to take responsibilities for our history and historical monuments. I felt so angry learning about the demolition of our other religious and historical places as well as white washing of sikh art in Baba Attal Sahib Ji in Amritsar. For God's sake, wake up and at least try to preserve what is left. In my teens,I remember visiting gurdwaras in Anandpur Sahib and its surroundings area and again in 1999. I could not even recognise them. Now if you see one gurdwara, you feel you have seen them all. You do not have the same emotions in your heart standing there as you did before this modernisation so called Kar Sewa.

After reading this, it is a clear example that our people are destroying own historic building, which links directly to destroying own roots. So for other people, this is clear signal that it is even more easier to destroy the sikh heritage and its roots. This is WRONG ! As long as manmuk persons even having bana takes care of such religious institutions, this is bound to happen. They will do whatever they think is right, profitable to them, and without taking into consideration the sentiments of sikh community as a whole. These manmuks do whatever pleases to them. We really need gurmuk people on such high class instutions, where they will not think of such small gains but instead spread the message of the guru and spread stories of contributions of sikhism. Also, these buildings will one day also fund tourism, so economically it makes no sense to destroy them, no one is interested in new buildings, they can be built anytime, once an historic buildng is gone, thats it.

Punjabis seem to be the only people in the world that have no care for their historic architecture, all other countries treasure their history and architecture, when will Punjabi people start thinking like 21st century educated people?

Why can't the bhunga co-exist with the new development? It will lend a positive feature to the development.
A good architect with a sense of history can make it happen.
It will be a shame if they pull down the historic structure. We have already lost so many historic gurdwaras in Pakistan due to the partition of the counry.

Under garb of “ Guru maniyon Granthâ€? our custodians of sikh panth have deliberately destroyed sikh historical monuments such as Guru Tegh bahadurs monument in the precincts of gurdwara dukh niwaran Patiala, wall at Fatehgarh sahib, Delhi gurdwaras constructed by sikh misel sardars and many more. We should learn from other nations and try to protect our heritage what ever is left.

How can any sane person tear these buildings down? The only explanation I can offer is that the people responsible for mutilatiing the living History of the Khalsa Panth are in fact enemeies of the Panth. My words might seem somewhat dramatic but tell me, how else can these mindless actions be interpreted?

What a tragedy! It seems that every monkey these days is armed with a razor and is hellbent on destroying our heritage. Proactive, literate and wise leaders need to reperesent and lead our community and not these monkeys.
