In the years following the Jallianwala Bagh incident at Amritsar, the Sikhs moved ahead with peaceful protests against British-backed control of many Sikh gurdwaras. One of the key protests was held at Jaito in 1924. A journalist, S. Zimand, describes the scenes he witnessed as the peaceful ‘shahidi jathas’ (martyrdom groups) faced the brunt of the British administration: “...They were in great part rustics, but many trades and professions were represented. About noon the jatha started, marching like a regiment to war – as the Sikhs had marched in the British campaigns in Asia and on the western front in Europe. They had flags, a band, a separate kitchen and a small ambulance corps, but they had no arms. Every face was lit with the fire of religious devotion, and their continual shouts of “Satt Shri Akal” were like the murmur of an approaching storm. Five flags were borne in front and Guru Granth Sahib was carried on a palanquin in the middle.... The British administrator explained that if the jatha did not comply with his order, he would be compelled to open fire. The jatha kept on toward the shrine... The firing was in regular volley. The crowds rushed away, the jatha advanced. Ordered under arrest, they submitted cheerfully. With heads erect they marched to the local prison, while their wounded and dead were deposited in nearby places... During the firing only three Akalis left the ranks, after they were wounded. The rest stood their ground. They kept their vows of non-violence under fire.” (John Clark Archer, The Sikhs, 1946.) Agitation of this non-violent nature was instrumental in the passing of the Gurdwara Act of 1925, which placed the control of the gurdwaras into the hands of an elected body of Sikhs. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Another example of Amazing Sikhi ! ! ! Proud to be born a Sikh.

JINA SINGHA ATE SIGHNIA NE GURUDWARIA DEE PAVIT"RTA NU KAEM RAKHIA ,TINA DEE KAMAEE THA DHIAN DHAR KHALSA JI BO-LO JI WAHEGURU.............

The present generation should learn lessons from this and all sacrifices made by sikhs times and times again. We should feel proud and keep our head high instead of trying to give up sikhi and its religious principles to merge with the crowd.

dithia baaj neeh raina dharam sir dithia baaj neeh raina.........

Dhan sikhi. Das de grandfather vee is morche vich hissa laya see... that makes me feel proud. Lets learn something from our glorious history veero.

WJKK WAHO WAHO KHALSA PANTH< TAN TUHADI SEVAA

Just like the Greatest Sikh Generation of SIKHS who freed Gurdwara Sahibs from the cluthches of corrupt and ruthless Mahants brutaly backed by The British Regime. Sikhs of today around the world need to protect their Gurdwaras from the daily onslaught and infiltration of Radhaswami's, Narakdharis, Aryasmajis, BJP, Sacha Sauda(backed by BJP & RSS), Phony Babas, Christians, and others etc. Stay Vigilante.

"gurmukh andar sahaj hai man chadhya dasve akaas. tithe oongh na bhukh hai har amrit naam sukh vaas. nanak dukh sukh vyapat nahin jithe aatam raam pargaas." and "gurmukh antar saant hai man tan naam smaye. naamo chitve naam padhe naam rahe liv laaye." only a true sikh can follow non violence. non violence of cowards have no meaning. gandhis theory was of cowardness.

My grate grate grandfather left Canada with their jatha for the Jaito Morcha. I am proud of them all.

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguruji ki fateh

My grand father Sardar Ran Fateh Singh was among those brave sikhs. He was injured in the morcha and even I have witnessed the pain of his old injuries. I am so proud of them all.

A GREAT ARTICLE AND I AM PROUD OF THOSE SIKHS WHO KEEP SUCH COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THE GENERATION OF GREAT GURU KA KHALSA..... GOD BLESS TGHEM ALL...

It is in this era that the British policy transformed and put controls on our gurdwaras and teachings, through the so called 'elected sikhs' of the Lahore faction(representing British interest) as opposed to the Amritsar faction. The mandate from our Sri Guru Ram Das Ji to the udasis sikhs was thus broken by the British so as to indoctrinate the sikhs( by changing their religous practises and beliefs) and at the same time to use them for their foreign conquests. It is sad that most readers of the above article do not understand what these protesting matyrs were marching for and giving up their lives for.

Waheguru! Long live Sikhi and Khalsa! Been to churches, been to mandirs and all, but all I can say is that there is no spiritual path like Sikhi and the joy of being in a Gurdwara!

Gurpal singh ji please read the history properly. what those udasis were doing we all know. how the butcher general dyer was honoured at amritsar we know. what kind of hindu rituals have started in all of our historical gurudwaras we know. how the puja of hindu deitys have started their we know. how these masands were raping, looting of sikh women who went to these gurudwars we know. how the real meaning of gur shabad was distorted we know. how the lower caste sikhs were denied karah parsad at harmandir sahib we know. all kind of sins and rituals of hindus were being performed at gurudwars just opposing what guru sahib says. yes election system in gurudwara mangement is not fulfilled the aspirations of those martyrs. we still need a better system but it do not mean to distort the history. just read the history and you will come to know why lala lajpat rai, arya smaji and other hindu leaders were oppose to this change. just because they thought sikh will try to establish their own identity. these hindus have taken the control of bodh maths and announced that mahatma budh was an hindu avtaar. till date bodh gaya is under their control and budhist spread all over the world are requesting indian govt. to give them back the control of bodh gaya. even prime minister of japan has requested to the indian govt. you are living in fools paradise. i appeal to all sikhs please read history and judge everything accroding to gurbani. hindu brahmins have tried their best to distort of our history. it was started very earlier. till date we dont know who was the second bhai gurdas whose his writings are being read in gurudwaras and befooling ourselves. we are mixing both bhai gurdas ji. professor darshan singh khalsa has pointed this mistake in full length in one of his cassette.

It is noteworthy that such accounts of peaceful resistance by Sikhs predate Gandhi's projection as a messiah of peace. I wouldn't hesitate to state that Gandhi was greatly impressed by the peaceful deeds of Sikhs and after the Sikhs regained control of several historical gurdwaras, Gandhi himself congratulated them and commented that the first battle of "independence" was won. It is a shame that popular history so conveniently presents Gandhi as a great pioneering spiritual leader who lead masses in a peaceful uprising against the British.

Jarnail Singh ji, thank you very much for adding a perspective and dimension to the above article. However the period prior to the above event especially after the demise of the sikh kingdom of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh and the era between 1850 and 1924 when the above event took place many extaordinary events took place. In the context of religious worship in punjab, The christians missionaries were extremely aggressive in converting punjabis of all religions in the Punjab (especially the presbyterian churches). They were working aggressively in cohorts with the British adminstration of that day. The missionaries were fulfilling their mission by getting more followers and the British were fulfilling their objectives by creating a new minority group that would help in the administration of the region. In the late 1860's and early 1870's, many children from prominent families(from different religious groups) attending the missionary schools began converting to christianity on the promise of being the new elite administrative class in Punjab. It was in the 1870's that there was an uproar in Lahore with regard to the convertions and societies were formed by the different religious groups to defend against the unscrupilous churches and authorities. It was this era that the Singh Sabha Movement was born and an accomodation between the lahore faction and the Amritsar faction was reached. The Amritsar faction slowly faded away with age and its members were replaced by the Lahore faction which took control by the year of 1900. Many new standards were introduced in the following years to strengthen the foundation of sikhism with some popular and some not. One of the unpopular one was the above when the gurdwaras were brought under indirect control of the British via the Lahore faction through the Singh Sabha Movement. Hence the reason for the above protest. With regard to your comments on the raping ,looting and class discrimination by the masands, I would speculate that some incidences would have taken place over the centuries and this excuse was used as a reason to occupy the gurdwaras. However the same goes on today in some of our gurdwaras where we have had cases of rape, meddling in the accounts and non submission of accounts by thugs and different gurdwaras for different class denominations(in villages of Punjab). Our gurus have left behind teachings for us, which are so pure and are of the highest order and are relevant then , today and will always be relevant in the future. Practising and living these teachings as in our Sri Guru Granth Sahib fulfils the mission of gurus who gave away their lifes for it. So its imperitive to be aware of how we have been misled with disinformation and propaganda to make us submissive for other purposes, without losing sight of our gurus' mission. Our gurdwaras or formerly known as dharamsalas had always had four doors inviting people from all denominations to our sikh teachings with utmost respect and love. Lets encourage this form of Sikhism instead of hate(regarding anti-hindu practice in Punjab based politics).Sikhism and the teachings of our gurus are meant for the entire world and not just Punjab and our gurus did spread their teachings all over India and as well as outside of India.

veer gurpal singh ji. i agree to most of your views about what should be done but i am pained when you says misdeeds of mahants used as an excuse to occupy gurudwaras. you are not doing justice to those who have sacrificed their lives. after a great protest and sacrifice sikhs have got the keys of their own gurudwaras and you are saying they have "occupy" someone else house. if a faction of sikhs wanted the control of gurudwaras then why they have adopted election system in which evey sikh can vote. if their intention was malafied then they must have adopted trustee kind of system. yes election system is not proven appropriate but masands were the worst. honouring general dyer in harmandir sahib has no great significance for you. actually you do not want to give thought on it. what kind of situation was their at that time? if these masands would have continued then they might have not hesitated to honour indira gandhi after operation blue star. i am not saying that all masands were bad and it could be the case that some of them were running gurudwaras properly but they way you are putting you point of view it gives an impression that you are somehow belong to that pujari class and got misinformation about history. dear gurpal ji i do not want to hurt your sentiments and as a student of history understands your point but if we didnt get the control of our gurudwaras then situation would become similar to bodh maths. these bodh maths were became centres of vyabhichar and all kind of misdeeds. it is one of the main reason why bodh dharam could not last long in india. if today you will give control of gurudwaras to those kind of masands and kind of golak is coming to gurudwaras very soon you will find a nexus of these masands builiding up with politicians and govt. agencies. i am not supproter of present system but still members have to got elected and proper budgeting is necessary but if the control was in the hands of masands then situation would be similar to peeths of hinduism where to get mahanti murders are normal thing. they have billions but not using for the welfare of their community. no check no tax nothing and sprituality has gone. let me conclude with words "dear gurpal ji if the present system is not fine then system of masandi was worst so time is to think about another better system of selection." wjkk wjkf

Why are such things covered or published jus by sikhs mags website etcs, efforts should be made to publish them in mainstream mags etc, otherwise the effort is worth just .1 %
