Anand KarajA Mohali-based member of the SGPC demanded yesterday that the pre-Independence Anand Marriage Act, 1909, should be adopted during the winter session of Parliament. Hardeep Singh said the Act that was in force during British times, gave the Sikhs a separate identity.

However, after Independence, the Sikhs were clubbed under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, for registration of marriages.

He said in the light of the directive of the Supreme Court to ensure registration of all marriages, the time now was right to adopt the Anand Marriage Act after defining the term Sikh, procedure of Anand Karaj, way to register a marriage under the Act and prescribe conditions for divorce.

Hardeep Singh asked the Punjab Government to prevail upon the Union Government to get the Anand Marriage Act adopted and implemented.

He further appealed to all Sikh members of Parliament to rise above politics and press for the adoption of the Act in both Houses of Parliament.

Criticising the SGPC for not brining a resolution on the Anand Marriage Act in its general house held on November 23, he asked the executive committee to pass a resolution on this at its meeting scheduled for tomorrow and send the resolution to the Punjab government, asking it to take up the matter with the Union Government.

Hardeep Singh was supported by several representatives of Sikh bodies.
