AmritsarThe book, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Life and Struggle, published by SGPCs Sikh History Research Board, which refuses to recognise Baba Ala Singh as a Sikh warrior, is likely to create ripples in the Sikh circles. The book, authored by Kirpal Singh, a research scholar of the SGPC, also documented that Phulkian (of Baba Ala Singh) was never a Sikh misl as claimed by historians. The Arabic word misl means like. The Sikh misls were alike, in the sense that they were considered equals. The misls were 12 companies of Sikhs, some numbering a few hundred while others could field tens of thousands of men. So much so Harbans Singh in his The encyclopaedia of Sikhism has also described that Phulkian was a prominent misl of an eighteenth century Sikh ruling clan, which arose in the region south of the Sutlej and was counted the twelfth misl though it did not form part of the Dal Khalsa like the 11 others. Interestingly, former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also belongs to the Phulkian misl. The Guru Nanak Dev Universitys publication, Baba Ala Singh, however, described the founder of Patiala state as the great Sikh devout. While the book of the university was released during the Amarinders regime, the SGPCs book was launched this week only. The encyclopaedia of Sikhism traced the origin of the Phulkian misl to Phul .d. 1652, a Siddhu Jatt of Mehraj village, now in Bathinda district, who had met Guru Har Rai, during his visit to the Malva area and received his blessings. From amongst his seven sons, Tilok Singh (Tiloka), the eldest son, was the ancestor of the princely states of Nabha and Jind, and Ram Singh (Rama), next to him, forefather of the rulers of Patiala. Tilok Singh was a disciple of Guru Gobind Singh, who had called upon them by a hukamnama for a detachment of cavalry and had blessed their house as his own tera ghar mera asai. They had helped Baba Banda Singh Bahadur with men and money in his early moves, reads The Encyclopedia of Sikhism. However, the SGPCs book alleged that the Phulkian sardars never helped Guru Gobind Singh or his followers in their struggles against tyrants. The book further alleged that the Chaudhary Phul, the founder of Phulkian, also did not help in any Sikh struggle against Mughals. They (the Phulkian sardars) also shirked to coming forward to raise their voice when Sahibzadas (younger sons) of Guru Gobind Singh were being bricked alive. Author Kirpal Singh alleged that the Phulkian sardars instead supported Aurangzeb, the then Muslim ruler. When the Sikhs got divided into two main segments, Budha Dal and Taruna Dal, the Phulkian state or sardars did not evince any interest to safeguarding the community. So much so, no Phulkian sardar had ever visited Amritsar or Anandpur Sahib during the Sikh struggles, the book reads. The SGPCs book alleged that Baba Ala Singh had violated Amrit many times. However, many historians believe that there were 12 Sikh misls and Phulkian was one of them.

This is a political decision bought about to distort history and attack the current head of the Phulkian - Captain Amarinder Singh. From what I have seen these SGPC books are in themselves poorly written and not even worth buying.

This topic demands serious discussion on the role played by the phulkian heads during the early days of Sikh struggle and the First Indipendence Struggle in 1857 by the emenent Historians of India.

I have read the book written by S. Kirpal Singh Research Scholar. In this the writter convinces the reader by his historical aptitude and research that Maharaja Ala Singh's Phulkian state cannot be regarded as Sikh misl. The past historian innocently or delebrately were stating the Phulkian state as a Misl. The Sikh Misls were the product of the long Sikh struggle against the foreign rulers and attackers.

As all know SGPC is not a sikh Central organisation but for the time being it is in the hands of non-sikh Badal and co. (P) ltd. Dont expect anything worthwhile from this group they are bent upon degrading sikh religion and write what suits this family of traitors

As was earlier the Gurudawaras were controlled by Mahants now again same thing is there most of the Gurudawaras are controlled by Mahants they dont do anything worthwhile for Preaching teaching of guru Sahiban but there own end use.

There should be no comment before reading the book by kirpal singh. I and my two or three friends had read this book. we all appriciate the effort made by the author. The explanation on the Phulkian state in the book is correct.dr. Hari Ram Gupta a renouned historian has earlier stated these facts about Phulkian state heads towards the Sikhs and their antinational role in Indian history.
