This was stated by Tourism and Cultural Affairs minister Hira Singh Gabria while addressing a meeting of officers of his department here today. Mr Gabria said Punjab would be developed as the most preferred tourist destination within the next three years as the state had tremendous untapped tourist potential. He said work had been started on preparing a master plan to develop tourism along identified river sites in state. A team had also been assigned the task to explore the possibility to develop Ranjit Sagar dam, on the Ravi river, as a tourist spot. The minister also discussed ways and means to promote water sports like rowing, tubes and towables and boating on the river sites. He further said the sole objective to promote tourism in the state was to contribute to the economy of the state by not only creating enough employment potential for the natives but also help the tourists to get a feel of the culture and history of Punjab. Mr Gabria said the department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs was all set to develop a pilgrimage circuit at an estimated cost of Rs 9.20 crore. The Central government's share in this project was Rs eight crore. This pilgrimage circuit would cover Anandpur Sahib, Kirtapur Sahib, Chamkaur Sahib, Fatehgarh Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, Muktsar, Sultanpur Lodhi, Goindwal, Khadoor Sahib, Baba Bakala, Sri Hargobindpur, Dera Baba Nanak, Batala, Amritsar, Rauza Sharif (Fatehgarh Sahib), Devi Talab (Jalandhar) and Batal Church (19 th century) in Gurdaspur district.

| More & more people want to see Punjab's Culture, Heritage and religious places but every time, we see anouncements & annoicemnets only. When do we get the real picture to see? Since independence, Punjab Tourism is never there, it is there for name sake. Ebfore starting tourism, we have to setup the infrastructure of Roads, Hotels, Electricity and other basic amenties which are missing from most of the places. Why dont Punjab's different political parties forget their parties and develop the tourism foremost ? Every time, new party comes to rule, all previous development (though minor) are forgotten and thrown away. Punjab Tourism is a great potential for employment and revenue generation and if we want Punjab's growth, we have to look at this phase also. |
