NTThe government should take measures to control air pollution and traffic problems in the city as these issues eclipsing its beauty, Said Dr Elisabeth Elide and Dr Kristin Skare Orgeret on Sunday.

The two women are faculty members of the University of Oslo’s Institute of Media and Communication. They are working on a student and teacher exchange programme between Pakistan and Norway.

Dr Elisabeth told Daily Times that she had visited Pakistan seven times, the first trip to Lahore in 1988. She said the city had a rich culture and history and that it impressed every visitor. She said rapidly growing commercial activity was proof of development work being done in the city. She said she had visited many areas of Pakistan, but was impressed by the city.

She visited Badshahi Mosque, Lahore Fort, Lahore Museum, Shalamar Gardens and Gawlamandi. She said the construction style of the Moguls was impressive and the buildings were proof of it. She said Norway also had a lot of historical buildings, but they were smaller compared to the historical buildings in Lahore.

She said it was a tragedy that the city’s beauty deteriorated every time she came to visit. She said the traffic problems were making visiting the city unpleasant. She proposed that CNG buses replaced rickshaws to curb pollution.

Dr Elisabeth said Pakistan and Norway should develop tourism and journalists of both countries play an important role in this regard. She said 30,000 people in Norway with Pakistani backgrounds were eager to visit Pakistan.

She praised the beauty of truck culture in Pakistan and enjoyed truck art in the city. She also said she was impressed with the close-knit family system in Pakistan. She said she enjoyed a wide variety of food in Lahore and the lively bazaars of the city were a great attraction.

She said the youth in Pakistan actively participated in general activities. The people of Pakistan were very hospitable, she said. She said the amount of NGOs in the country was proof of the struggle for women rights.
