Legend - Stories from the Life of Hari Singh Nalwa PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 13 February 2007

Five and half years ago, during an interview with a correspondent of the Hindustan Times, about her work as a personal enrichment trainer, Delhi born, Vanit Nalwa, was asked about her surname. As she began to recount the story of how her ancestor Hari Singh was given the cognomen ‘Nalwa’, it dawned on her just how little she knew about her own ancestry. Within a few days, the events of 11 September 2001 changed the world order and sent everyone scurrying to locate Afghanistan on the nearest map. Vanit then commenced her search for information about Hari Singh Nalwa, who had spent a lifetime subduing the Afghans.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh consolidated the Sikh Kingdom in the late 18th–early 19th century. This extended beyond the five doabs into the trans-Indus region bordered by the Sulaiman range and touching the foothills of the Hindukush mountains. Lahore was its capital. Hari Singh’s contribution was most significant in annexing regions in possession of the Afghans. A large part of what was once the Kingdom of the Sikhs now largely forms Pakistan.

"During the course of my search, I found many books written on Hari Singh Nalwa in Urdu, Gurmukhi, English and one even in Marathi." said Vanit. "There were so many interesting and fascinating aspects dealt with in these books that motivated me to seek a more detailed historical perspective."

Extensive research in The National Archives of India, New Delhi, uncovered reports dispatched to the Governor General by the British Agent stationed at Ludhiana, spanning the entire period of the Sikh Kingdom. The latter was specifically deputed to keep an eye on Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s territory. Hari Singh features most prominently in these reports following his death. The British Gazetteers, compiled after the annexation of the Punjab, filled in further gaps.

Foreign visitors to the Sikh Kingdom for example, Baron von Hügel and Godfrey Vigne, met Hari Singh and provide first-hand narratives. Three of the four volumes of the Lahore court chronicle were translated from the original Persian into Gurmukhi and English in the second half of the 20th century.

Now, the seventh generation descendant of Hari Singh Nalwa is in the process of writing the definitive biography of one of Punjab's greatest military men. "I am compiling stories relating to Hari Singh Nalwa’s life. If you recall any story, I would love to hear from you. Please give me the source of the story, the age at which you first heard the tale, the place of origin of your ancestors, besides of course your name and date of birth. This information may provide some insight into the continuity of a tradition. It will be my pleasure to acknowledge those whose version of a story is included in the book scheduled to appear later this year."

It is said Pathan women would whisper to their naughty children who refused to sleep at night,"Hush, child!Go to sleep otherwise Nalwa will come!"And promptly the frightened child would sleep off.Such was the fear of Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa who ironically was a household name among the hardy Pathans of Kabul-Kandhar because of his bravery , power and fairmindedness.

Hari Singh Nalwa was of Uppal clan from Gujjrawalan, he was born not so far from where Ranjit was born. As per my information, once he killed a tiger with his sword when riding with Ranjit Singh. This incident made Ranjit Singh to honor him with the title of Nalwai (Named after ancient Raja Nal of Punjab who used to slay tigers with Kirpans). He founded the Fortress of Jamrud and asked Sikhs to mount him on horse even when he is dead so that Afghans would stay away from them..
I always thought that he was Uppal clan did not know that Nalwa was also a lastname. Are you directly related to Hari Singh Jee?

Nalwa is a title, much like the Valiant. Literally translated, it means Tiger Killer. Sardar Hari Singh was out hunting with Ranjit Singh when a tiger suddenly attacked . Hari Singh had no time to draw his sword, so he grabbed the jaws of the tiger with his bare hands and broke the tiger's jaw, from which the tiger died. Ranjit Singh was impressed by this act and conferred upon him the title Nalwa.

Hari Singh was also a Sikh as he was administered Amrit and became a member of the Khalsa Panth. Therefore, he was NOT Uppal or Chappal or any other clan member...only of the Khalsa. The Khalsa is instructed to discard its previous clan associations as they are of the Khalsa clan afterwards.

I read about Nalwa sardar in a book in Gurmukhi by perhaps author Trilok Singh at my adolescent age obtained from booksellers at Bazar Mai Sewan Amritsar.I stiil remember pushto words CHUP SHA HARIA RAGLA which were written in gurmukhi script as from the mouth of Afghan women who used to make their children afraid by these words. That show how much a terror, he was ,among afghan people at his time. Then i recall though not vivdly to see personally some picture or sketch of Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa which i saw in possesion of descendants of Sh. Faqir Azizuddin who arranged a display of their belongings about Sikh Raj ,at Lahore museum ,for the sikh sangat who visited Lahore samadh of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh at his Barsi in 1964.A copy of sketch is available at sikh heriatage site of UK.This picture depicts benevolent or saintly aspect of Sradar Hari Singh's personality.I appreciate your effort at this modern age when we have more resources to collect and compile infromation to bring about a comprehensive volume about Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa. Though I personall do not possess any articles about him but sources i have explained above may prove useful to compiling agency.

My parents came from NW Punjab, bodering Afghanistan. They left at the time of partition of British India in 1947. the stories related to me by my mother seem to have been listed above. One about the pushto words that people in that region used to hush their children and second about the woman who sought to marry Hari Singh. What perhaps may be added is that there was a saying by people in the NW region that whenever the local gurdwara was targetted for attack and loot by the "Gaddi" afghani tribesmen on horse especially after the Rehras prayers they attackers were never successful. Captured tribesman used to say that we come to attack but we find aremd sikhs on horseback gurading the gurdwara and the local small sikh community. Imagination today fact yesterday, i do not know, but the faith of the people and confidence was immense - perhaps a legacy of Hari Singh. I am happy that u are taking the time to compile. If i can assist please write. I will keep my eyes and years open. Kind Regards and good luck. On the opposite end i have also heard of current descendants of Hari Singh who appear intimidated by their own shadows, strange world.

  Dear Vanit Ji, SSA,

I am not sure if you have this fact, I proably heard it from Sant Singh Ji Maskeen, in one of his katha, that Hari Singh Nalwa was so strong, that the "dole" he used to pick water from the well is so heavy that three or four normal people are required to even lift it empty. I am not aware of where this "dole" is now. "dole" is a punjabi word for a drum.

Our family are direct decendents of Hari Singh. It's interersting to see how much people know about him. Our family hails from the North West region, Gujjuranwala, Pindi and Peshewer are all cities of importance to us. My father's name is Rajinder and my grand-father's name is Chetan Dev-ji. Let me share what I've heard within our family. My understaning is that Nalwa (Nalua) was bestowed as a title on him by Ranjit Singh, which loosely translates into "Bravest of the Brave" in Persian. I've also heard he was given a black opal stone by a ruling Pathan for sparing his territory from being ransacked, during one of his excursions in Afghanistan. Incidently, Uppal is the sanskrit word for Opal, both mean the same. Also, his sword sits in a museum somewhere in Punjab (I can't remember but I can find out) . I've also heard the black opal stone is being held by someone from our family - but has not been revealed. I'm actually born in Canada and reside in Toronto. If anyone is from around feel free to drop me a line.

Simply put Nalwa was the fiercest WARRIOR of that era. Europeans everywhere, that are completely unbiased and can objectively look at the accomplishments and achievements of great generals of different eras have basically annointed Hari Singh as the single greatest General of all-time. That is a well-deserving title. If Nalwa had even HALF of the resources of other generals.. it is quite possible he could've conquered most of Asia.

Every army needs a great leader, someone that can gravitate to and respect. Nalwa embodied that and his mere presence filled his soliders with confidence and a sense of invincibility. Nalwa was not only a fierce warrior, he seemed like an extremely humble and modest man.. furthering his legend even more.

** I most definitely feel that there should be a movie made about him. But the actors have to be meticulously chosen and there should be a large sum of money invested into the project by a big-time studio. The movie would be a blockbuster, if done correctly, in my opinion. Nalwa in a lot of ways is debatably the single biggest reason why the Sikhs have as much land, international respect and courage around the world. If he didn't battle like he did and uphold the great foundation that our Gurus has built.. we may not be here in such numbers and history would be much different. A lot is owed to this man, and he should never be forgotten. His accomplishments should be glamourized and be used to motivate the watered down pop-culture, sex, drugs and unneccasry violence generation of today.

A movie is the best way to reach millions of people, Sikhs and other cultures and it's the best way for ppl to be able to identify easily with the man and who he was and what he represented. This project should be started immediately in my opinion as the youth of today, of which I am one .. needs a jolt ..an infusion of pride and Nalwa's accomplishments would be just the tonic to begin the process.

I remember there was a punjabi poem in CBSE syllabus (1996 to 1999 perhaps) of a attack on afghan fort when he met an old man and his son. The name of the enemy was mohamaad 'Yaar' perhaps or something, don't remember for sure though. It was in old sort of punjabi with many (now) obsolete words. The seige description was good though.
