Rustam said writing down centuries old classical music would be a major achievement. Musical heritage of the subcontinent had so far been passed on by heart, he said, and was limited to pupils and sons of families of classical musicians. Musicians of the subcontinent could teach classical music far better than the teachers at Western educational institutions, he said, but Pakistan had done little on music education. “I’m glad the Punjab University has finally taken a step towards promotion of classical music,” he said. MA students were being taught philosophy of music, its history, music theory and Urdu literature besides practical music, he said, and would be given a choice between Eastern and Western music after the first two semesters and between genres half way during the degree. Students would have an ocean of opportunities after they complete their degree, he said, and they would replace the unqualified musicians in film, TV and Radio. The Pakistani government has done little so far to preserve classical music, which Muslims had a monopoly over for centuries. A British musician tried to write down Indian classical music during the Raj but did not succeed. Some efforts have also been reported in this regard in India. | ||||||||||||

| once , when i was in mumbai i got oppurtunity to attend a classical program organized by local community. there dr. karkare ishwar chandra performed raag bihag it was simply splendid . then he switched to a bhajan in Bhairavi . how great performer he is. , i just remembered his performance for six years still now. |
