A replica of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s standard was installed on a hilltop by a heritage foundation four years ago to commemorate the landmark in Sikh history but the site, which is part of property owned by truck manufacturer Swaraj Mazda, is now succumbing to the expansion plans of the company . The spot in the Shivalik Hills, earlier notified as a heritage site by the Depart ment of Culture and Archaeology is thus , under threat of being levelled. The area adjoining it has already been bulldozed. The passage to the heritage site has been closed, and sheds are being con structed right next to the flag replica. There are ecological issues too (see box on page 11). Hindustan Times was denied a visit to the site on Monday morning by company officials. While Swaraj Mazda general manager (personnel) P.K. Bhardwaj, whom HT managed to meet after much persuasion, refused to talk, the “seniors” in Chandigarh he referred the team to could not be reached. Punjab Heritage and Education Foun dation is the Chandigarh-based NGO that is currently in a court battle with the government to protect the site. Four years ago, it had installed a revolving metal replica of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s flag measuring 4 feet x 8 feet on a 50-foot-high iron pole along with a memorial stone. Punjab Chief Secretary Ramesh Inder Singh directed Nawanshahr Deputy Commissioner Bhawna Garg on April 25 to take necessary action. A meeting followed, in which officials and the foundation agreed that the façade of Shivalik Hills as viewed from Rupnagar Boat Club would be maintained along its length while its breadth would be determined by the contour of the hills. To determine the exact khasra numbers, a survey was conducted on April 26, and around 12 acres measured for notification as “protected area”. However, the draft notification issued on April 30 had the area reduced by more than half. It had also been shifted, thus excluding the spot where the flag replica is currently installed, says foundation member Col Jatinder Singh (retd), who was present during the demarcation along with archaeological, revenue, forest and soil conservation officials. Col Jatinder says in the interest of an amicable solution, the foundation had agreed to shift the site slightly but after the draft , notification allotted only 41 kanals 15 marlas, the foundation rejected the proposal and is now insisting on not shifting the replica. Foundation president Gurbax Singh Shergill says: “The draft notification belies the government’s assurance of preserving Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s legacy .” Trying to play down the controversy Chief Secretary Ramesh , Inder Singh says since nobody knows the exact location where Maharaja Ranjit Singh hoisted his flag, the plan is to earmark a suitable spot in the general area to commemorate the historical moment in a befitting manner. Regarding the decrease in the proposed notified area, he says the measurement differs in uneven hilly areas. Instead of seeing any trick in this, we should appreciate that Swaraj Mazda has agreed to give away a portion of its land for the heritage site. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Enough is enough. For heaven sake and for your children sake, Oh! you the people in authority, leave the historical places alone. By bull dozing them, you will be simply cutting the branches of the tree upon which you and your children happen to sit. Do no more harm to them, for they are the eyes and ears through which our children and their children will be able to learn history. Our leaders should be judged upon how much they understand preservation.

History does not seem to have any significance to the Punjabis it seems. Recently came back from punjab and it pained me to see the old sites, havelis and ancient towns like Goindwal crumbling away. Despite it only being relatively a very young history, its all going to vanish with only foonotes in books. we must perserve such Historical sites as Ranjit Singh was one King who kept the British out of Punjab till his death. indian leaders are pathetic and mediocre anyway.

I totally agree with Jaswant Singh Ji,In name of development we are cutting the main veins of our heritage on which our childeren are going to learn obout our glorious past. There was only one lion in India who challenged the british expantion plans,That is Sher-E-punjab Maharaja Ranjeet Singh. We should make wholehearded efforts to stop all these activities which undermine the existance of our historic buildings and signs of our GREAT PAST.

I totally agree with Jaswant Singh Ji & Shammi Aulakh, these historical sites need to be saved & preservation for future generations, Indian leaders need to recognise that such heritage sites are of a national treasure.

I am feeling so bad and want to ask our sikh leaders and SGPC why they do not come forward to stop this act. They should protect sikh legacy at any cost. Sikh leaders should raise their voice strongly to save this historical sites. Its our duty to honour and preserve Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji's legacy.

After reading the passage i am having the thought that like Maharaja rahjit Singh Ji we to should protest against those who are trying to harm the great monuments that are been made in the remembrance og our great leader. These momumemts are Sikh Pride and these are the monuments who will lead our future and our childrens of remembring our great leaders I am felling very bad that today some powerful persons are trying to desroy those persons heritage, who have fought for them. It was those great men that today we are saying with huge voice " That We Are Sikhs and We are a Part Of a Great lion Maharaja Ranjit Singh ji "

JASWANT SINGH CLEARLY EXPRESSED HIS VIEW AND THE VIEW OF THE SIKH COMMUNITY ALL OVER THE WORLD. SIKH COMMUNITY IS FULL OF OPPORTUNISTS THAT IS WHY WE LOST OUR KINGDOM AND SOLD EVERY THINGS BY THOSE THUGS. THOSE ARE THE DIRTY TRICK POLITICIANS WHO CLAIMED TO BE GUARDIAN OF SIKHS ARE THE ENEMIES OF THE SIKHS AND THE SIKH CULTURES. THE SIKH POLITICIANS ARE ROBING THE PUBLIC WITH BOTH HANDS AND SHARING WITH ENEMIES TO PROTECT THEIR HOLDINGS.... GOD BLESS THE GUARDIANS OF SIKH RELIGION, CULTURE AND TRADITIONS.

The so called powers in punjab -- what have they done to preserve the heritage of Punjab. Should this be a surprise.

Sikhism roots comes from Vaishnavism.(Monotheisn-surrender and serve One Supreme Lord and Guru and no one else ) The Pious Pandavas of the Mahabharata were the Original Khalsas, they fought the Manmukhs/Mayavadis on the battlefield of Kurekshetra, and won, because they were fixed in God. THE FIVE KHALSAS are nothing more than the five Pandavas. What these so called leaders are doing is exactly what the rascal Duryodhana did with the approval of his evil father... to destroy the eyes and ears of the young khalsas, and he is being very successful so far, because there is no more Maharaj Ranjeet Singh Ji. or Maharaj Arjun to stop them. Five thousand years ago on the battle field of Kurekshetra in northern Punjab , the Mahabharat war took place, at the onset of the was Maharaj Arjun did not want to fight, he was overcome by maya, and Krishna chastised him, he told him as a Khatri you must fight on religious principles, otherwise you will bring shame upon your families, and so on the instruction of Sri Krishna, Maharaj Arjuna picked up his bow and arrow and fought like a lion, ...640 million was killed in Punjab and the 5 pandavas regained their kingdom. We must use what ever resourses is available to regain our Kingdom, and this applies to Khatris all over the world. My great grand father was a Singh, from Punjab we have lost our heritage ,and now live outside of India , USA, I was born in Trinidad, V.J.Singh the great golfer whose roots comes from Punjab have lost his heritage. We are a very big family living both inside and outside of India. We must preserve our teachings and cultural heritage, otherwise we will wind up like Duruodhana.

K. J. Singh is totally misleading. There was no Khalsa established until the Guru came. K.J. post is nothing more the pure revisionism. The Five original Khalsas came from different castes. Five Pandavs were of the same caste. There is no concrete evidence of the Mahabharat war and the 640 million figure is just too incredulous to believe. Sikhi has its roots in the Guru's teachings, not in the surrender to Vishnu.

It is shame on the authority and also a pity as they are cutting the tree inch by inch on which they are sitting on.RSS with its influence is the main force behind it."WATCH OUT"

It is sad. Sikh histroy is being destroyed in the text books and historical sites in the name of development. When and where will it end? If this continues then it should surprise no one if renewed demands are made for an independent Sikh homeland.

In response toBhai Ranjit Singh Bhindar, if he is so knowledgable in Sikhism, then why does he not follow the instructions of Maharaj Guru Gonind Singh Ji. that every Sikh's last name should end with "Singh" and not Bhindar. it tell me that he does not quite understand the message of the Sikh Gurus. Secondly, he denies that the Mahabharat war took place , In theSri Sukhmani Sahib Ji, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji writes , its all in the Puranas but the pundits do not know, Guru Ji was obviously referring to the Mayavadi Brahmins the followers of Shankararcharya at that time , today the modern followers of Shankararcharya is associated with Brahmin Samaj, Hindu Samaj, Arya Samaj, Gujrati Samaj, RSS /VHP. all coverd atheists, and anti Vaishnavas. These are the rascals who are referred to as the lowest of mankind in the seventh chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. and they possess absolutely no knowledge of the Puranas and so they deny that Mahabharat war ever took place, The Mahabharat is nothing more than than the history of God, and so good people like your self as practising sikhs , being influenced by the teachings of Hindus who follow Shankara, are looking for evidence, but it is all in the Puranas and every Sikh Gurus knew it, And finally you have no knowledge of the Science of Karma and Reincarnation, let me conclude by quoting the fifth Nanak....... Its all in the Puranas but you havent read the 18,000 Verses of the Puranas the so called fifth Veda, the works of Sri Vyasa Dev the compiler of the Vedas and the Puranas, and NO Sikh Guru rejected the Vedas and the Puranas, they rejected the evil caste conscious shivitee brahmins. Remember Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in a Vaishnava family and not a Shivite family and he taught 100% Vaishnava philosophy, Sri Sukhmani Sahib Ji and the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji teachings is consistant with the Monotheistic teaching of Vaishnavism as taught by Sri Chaitanty Mahaprabhu. (And not Shiviteeism) Shivitees are Sikhs worst enemies, because they are monists,

It is a great shame to read what is going on in Punjab, we should try to stop this monsterous step by barracading the area concerned and protect its significance for only for our children's sake but also for the sake of their children. Shocking news!!

Later they will say who was ranjit singh? his kingdom was not that big. these communal, communist writers have no hesitation in writing that guru teghbahdur saheb was a hooligan and he was not beheaded because of religious reasons. guru sahib saved kashmiri pandits but what they did with sikhs after independence. they are akritghan. ahsaanframosh qaum.

This would not happen in any other country. Shame on India

i honestly feel soooo shamefull and disabled in a way coz i'm hear in uk n hav got nothin i can possibly do as a 15 yr old even tho ther is sooo much i can do! i feel astho i hav let ma punjab to shame! i apologise. but those people who do such evil will die in the most inhuman ways! WJKK WJKF

Sarkar-e-Khalsa Maharaja Ranjit Singh is a lion of Panjab and india and pakistan who saved hindus daughters from afganis and bring proud to not only to sikhs, also hindu and muslims. In his kingdom everyone treated with respect. My Grandfather was in his army. This is really sad what the doing.

Its moments like this i wonder what would have been if there was an established sikh state backed by the world...rather than being killed off slowly...we cannot blame anyone else but ourselves for having the short sightedness to side with or depend on others...

sikhon kuch sikho

Now it is even more clearer after watching all this that the need of the seperate sikh nation - "KHALISTAN" is more imminent than ever before. Otherwise enemies are getting more and more successful in 'Divide & Rule'. People like K.J.Singh should at least read Jap Ji Sahib, Chaupai Sahib, Sawaiye & Rehraas Sahib, properly to be aware of what Sikhs were, what they are, and what Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh Ji have written in these Alaahi Banis about these Vedas, Puraans Simiratis, Shaastars before commenting.
