| Central team visits war memorials |

A team of senior officials from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, led by Mr S.P. Singh, Director, Conservation, National Museum, New Delhi, visited the town today to make a study about the kind of financial and technical assistance required to conserve war monuments here. Other members of the team were Mr K.K. Sharma, Conservationist, Mr K.P.S. Bhadoria, Superintending Archaeologist, Chandigarh circle, ASI. The team visited Anglo-Sikh War Memorial, Ferozshah; War Pillar, Mudki; War Pillar, Mishriwala; besides Saragarhi Memorial Gurdwara and National Martyrs Memorial, Hussainiwala. The team was accompanied by officials of district administration including Mr K.S. Sidhu, Commissioner, Mr B.C. Thakur, DC, and Mr Rahul Tiwari, ADC. The Anglo-Sikh War Memorial was raised in memory of Sikh warriors who went down fighting during the first Sikh War against the British in 1845. The Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, had, during his visit here on March 23, directed the Commissioner, Ferozepore division, Mr K.S. Sidhu, to take up the matter of maintenance of war monuments with the Union Government on behalf of the state government. He had also announced to set up Punjab Memorial to perpetuate the memory of thousands of freedom fighters, soldiers and patriots who sacrificed their lives for the country. | |
