Punjab Principal Secretary, Information and Public Relations, D S Jaspal, called on the Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala last night at Raj Bhavan and presented him with a photograph of "Gurudwara Ber Baba Budha Sahib", which is located in the Golden Temple, Amritsar. The photograph is a selection from the "Tryst With Trees - Punjab's Sacred Heritage", which documents 48 sacred and historic Sikh shrines names after 17 species of trees, the most popular species being "Beri" (zizyphus jujuba), "Tahli" (shisham) and "Jand" (Prosopis spicigera). Jaspal apprised the Governor about the efforts being taken by the Chandigarh Nature and Health Society, a Chandigarh based NGO, of which he is the president, for preserving and propagating the sacred trees through modern nursery technology, a Raj Bhavan release said here today. Jaspal told the Governor that as an experiment, the Society had obtained stems of four Beri trees and "inducement of rooting" in these stems was now being attempted in simulated environment conditions through a mist-chamber, the release said. The Governor in turn, commended the efforts taken by Jaspal to highlight the role of nature and environment in general and trees in particular. Trees were repeatedly referred in all religious texts and hymns which emphasised that man must co-exist with the environment and respect the forests and that was why many trees and plants were revered and worshipped by the people, the Governor said according to the release. | |
