Historical Bunga demolished in Hazoor Sahib PDF Print E-mail

The 174-year-old historical Wassan Singh Bunga of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s time at Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib in Nanded, Maharashtra, has been razed to ground, much to the chagrin of heritage lovers.

Mr Balvinder Singh, a reader in the Department of Guru Ram Das Planning, Guru Nanak Dev University, who was an eyewitness to the demolition of the “bunga”, while talking to The Tribune here today, said that he tried his best to save the “bunga” by convincing the representative of the Maharashtra Government posted at Hazoor Sahib, but there was nobody to listen to him.

He said old buildings were being demolished as part of the prestigious expansion plan of Hazoor Sahib to mark the “Gurgaddi Divas”, scheduled to be held there in 2008. The Maharashtra Government has earmarked several crores for the expansion of Hazur Sahib City.

The word “bunga” is derived from Persian, meaning a hospice, or a dwelling place. Akharas and “bungas” served as centres of elementary Sikh education for a long time.

The name of the old building is “Wassan Singh Da Bunga”, which was reportedly built along with other buildings in 1832 on the directions of great Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who had specially sent masons and architects from Punjab to construct the buildings. However, they had come back after the death of the Maharaja in 1839.

Talking to TNS from Hazoor Sahib, Mr Amar Singh Bunga, great grandson of Sardar Waryam Singh Bunga, described the demolition of the heritage building as most unfortunate. He alleged that the Bir of Guru Granth Sahib was hurriedly taken away without caring for Sikh Maryada and the building was reduced to rubble by bulldozers.

State and federal governments of so called "Emerging India" don't give a hoot about Sikh shrines and Sikh history, since infrastructure development is the only mantra they are following. It is okay to develop infrastructure, but not at the expense of history. There will be no developed India and future generation of India will be as much in dark as these demolished buildings. The country and people that don't preserve and recognize their rich history to teach to next generation, do not have any future either.

It breaks my heart when ever I learn that certain priceless heritage Sikh site or Sikh historical monument is cleared away. Let alone the Government, where is our Sikh Shromani Committee who should be taking care of the Sikh historical sites and prevent such actions. Our so called Sikh leaders are fighting away ruining the good name of Sikhs created by our great Gurus, instead of addressing these important issues. It is shame that while the west has been investing millions to research history and preserve historical sites, we are clearing them away. It is sad state of affairs as these monuments once demolished are lost for ever.

I agree with the comments sent in by S. Gurnam Singh Sagoo, the Shromani Committee should be looking into these matters. The budget of Shromani Committee is bigger then Punjab Government so funds should be used to do maintainance on the ancient buildings rather then demolishing them. If more funds are needed I am sure people will be willing to contribute for the great cause.

This is the epitome of stupidity which dictates that no morals are indeed left in preserving not only our heritage but a part of history. One must automatically assume that this site contains no cultural significance due to the inherant stupidity and shortsightdesness of a a group of money hungry capitalist idiots. However, when the smell of the dirty cash was traded over to the people who decided that "new" dwellings for the so called "rich" (not in education more in wealth) did anyone actually consider the significance of this great monument......no. Sometimes it is true that people with lots of cash to spend are truly idiots. One should think that instead of demolishing such a place it SHOULD have been preserved as a museum or a place where one looks upon there heritage and is proud.

How many more of the ancient monuments and structures will be either bastardised/ looted or spoilt or have we forgotten the sacrifice of the Immortal warriors who gave there lives up so that we actually have a free land.

its really unfortunate that they r demolishing the historic monuments giving the most stupid reasons.i ask them celebration is more important or the preservance of our glory?atleast our future generation shud b able to know that our ancestors were like this, this was their life style so that they dont get lost in the crowd and 4get who they are.
these people want to celebrate or so called easiest way to waste sangat's donation.
I request them its not the time to celebrate because sikhs are still struggling 4 their identity within india, let us 4get the world.Racial attacks on sikhs mistaking them 4arabians is a proof.
still these so called panthic committees want to celebrate that too by erasing our heritage.jao (celebrate)ash karo

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh. We all know that it is very shamefull for all of us when these kind of situation is created. If there is anything and anybody can do than only SANGAT can do, because SGPC has lots of time but only for those issues where either they can fight for stupid issues or bebunyaad Izzat issues. Don't blame them bcs they don't have time for to save our culture or History.
