Archaeological experts have suggested to the government to buy a 'special crane' for drawing and photography purposes of the pictured wall at the Lahore Fort, prior to its preservation work, estimated to take a maximum of four to five years.
At present, the pictured wall is partially damaged to the extent that its colours have vanished, destroying the original grandeur.
In a report submitted in this regard, they opined that the art of the Mughal era must be preserved irrespective of the 'time-frame of preservation and provisions of necessary funds for the same.'
It is pertinent to note here that the pictured wall is situated in the north and northwest of the Lahore Fort and presents a series of tile montage panels which are amongst the most spectacular worldwide.
It has a remarkable unity of composition along with a variety of unique designs. Its construction was started by Mughal Emperor Jahangir and completed during the tenure of Shah Jahan in 1631-32 AD.
The Wall is nearly 450 meters in length and 17 meters in height. It is embellished with panels of tile mosaics and fresco paintings. The decorations are between the two cornices which are divided into a double row of arched recesses of different sizes. The fresco paintings are carried out in the arched recesses, while the spandrels are tastefully decorated with tile mosaics, depicting men, fairies, elephants, lions, dragons, scenes of animal fights, men playing polo, and numerous other games. The human figures on the wall give an insight into the fashion sense of that time, from royalty down to the servants and gladiators.
While talking to The Post, Curator Lahore Fort, Afzal Khan maintained that the Pictured Wall is a unique archeological item, adding that the preservation work would be accomplished under the funds released by the Government of the Punjab. "This is our national heritage and must be preserved accordingly," he added.
