Punjab govt to grant heritage status to Mohindra College Patiala:Kanwaljit Singh PDF Print E-mail

Mohendra CollegeThe 132 years old Government Mohindra College here would soon get heritage status. Tis was disclosed by Punjab Co-operation Minister Capt. Kanwaljit Singh here Thursday while addressing a function in the college to honour meritorious students.

He said he will take up the issue with Chief Minister. He said that it is duty of all of us to strengthen this institution which is biggest centre of higher studies for long time. He also recalled association of his father with the institution.

It may be mentioned here that Mohindra college is among the oldest colleges of Punjab. There were only two colleges before partition one was at Khalsa College Lahore and the second one was Mohindra College.

The Minister said that he would recommend for a special budgetary provision in the coming budget for the library of college which has more than 90 thousand books but is facing problems on the building front. He also announced a grant of Rs. 2 lacs for the development of the college from his discretionary funds.

Capt. Kanwaljit Singh also called upon for complete change in education pattern with special emphasis on Elementary education and creating an atmosphere to enthusiast youth for taking interest in learning process. He said that it is imperative for our education to change according to changing global scenario which demand more technical experts in the present system. He said that planning of education should be done in such a manner which may not only benefit youth but should also strenthen economic position of the state. Private sector can play a vital role in this field and govt. is trying its best on this front, he added.

He said that problem of unemployment is getting serious day by day which is pushing youth towards intoxicants and creating social evils. He said that female foeticide is a major challenge for the state and performance of girl child on education front should be an example for those who chose for female foeticide. He expressed happiness that today majority of the students were girls who were felicitated today.

Speaking on the occasion Surjit Singh Rakhra President NRI wing and former MLA said that Mohindra College has a golden history of in academic excellence. He also exhorted students to work hard which can create good habits among them. On the occasion Principal of the College Dr. DS Brar welcomed the guests and presented the annual report. J Rai Mangla President of Old Students Association announced two scholarships of Rs. 2500 each for the meritorious students. College Registrar SK Kaushik and Vice Principal Gurinder Kaur also addressed the gathering.
