The increasing level of pollution level in the vicinity of Golden Temple Golden temple in Amritsar, the holy Sikh shrine is posing serious threat to the gold lining on dome and walls of the temple. Alarmed over the development, the Punjab pollution control board (PPCB) has decided to have special air monitoring done in the area of the golden temple. Even though an air monitoring centre of the PPCB already functioning in the holy city, it is located at a distance from the golden temple. In view of this the board has decided to have a special drive undertaken to gauge the extent of air pollution in the immediate vicinity of the golden temple. Sources in the PPCB said that there were at least about a dozen dyeing and soap manufacturing units in neighbourhood the golden temple. Also there were a large number of jeweler shops, which are estimated to be around 150, in the vicinity of the golden temple. The effluents from these dyeing and soap manufacturing units pollute the air badly and this could affect the colour of the white marble of the temple. These sources said that when gold and silver were melted in the jewellers' shops there was emission of toxic gases including sulphur dioxide besides other gases which posed a serious threat to the grandeur of the white marble. These sources further revealed that the monitoring would continue for about 15 days and it is believed that in case the survey reveals threat of discolouring of the marble, the board may recommend remedial measures to be taken. It is pertinent to mention that Gurmeet Rai, Director, Cultural Resource Conservation Initiative has already criticized the prestigious 5.35 km Elevated Road Project to Sri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) at a cost of Rs173 crore. 'It will be disastrous to maintain our cultural hearitage", she said. She has said that it will create further traffic chaos near by Darbar Sahib Complex. She said that sanctity of Darbar sahib and will create disturbance when vehicles goes down directly to Darbar Sahib, it will be disastrous, she added. | ||||||||||||

| In today's era when man is becoming ignorant to the ever increasing pollution and its effects, Mr. Gagandeep has made a great effort in raising up this issue. Golden Temple, a heritage which is not just a sikh worshiping place but also considered to be the 8th wonder of the world, has come under the influence of man's brutal activities. In such a situation ringing an alarm in lieu of this, what I feel, is a marvellous effort. I really admire his initiative and would request him to bring more awareness on this topic and also pick up certain more issues. |

| It is very painful that the SGPC is managing the affairs at Hrmander Saheb is least bohtered about the consevation of the heritage sturcture and the culture of the sikh faith. the way SGPC is damaging the stucture can be seen very clearly, the 2 century old wall panel paintings in haarmander saheb are covered with the glass panels and the paintings are getting damaged due to the atmospheric pollution and temperature vairiation . the darbar saheb should be first of all completely airconditioned so that the main bulding is protected from the pollution and temperature variation. after air conditioning the rate of deterioration of the paintings will reduce and we can protect and conserve our haritage, then we can glass panel the painting . without controlling the temperature and humidity the mangement has put up the glass panels and which is further damging the paintings due to lack of ventilation. even the big swaroop of Sri Guru Granth Saheb manuscript is also getting damaged due to polllution, humidity and temperature. Hence, we request to all the like minded people and organisation to put up pressure on the SGPC to adopt proper conservation and preservation technique to protect our haritage and the culture. Same things you can observe at the Ajaibghar at harmander saheb, Bangla saheb Ajaib ghar, Gurudwara Saheb Sheesh Gung Ajaib Ghar and many more . we "the Sikh Heritage Foundation Hyderabad Deccan" have started the consevation of Manuscripts by estalishing a Manuscripts Conservation Centre in Hyderabad. our contact persons are: S Harpreet Singh IAS (Chairman SHFHD) S Sajjan Singh BE,MIE (convenor SHFHD) 0949416143 S Surender Singh Architect (Convenor SHFHD) 09391655445 email: This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it Sikh Heritage Foundation Hyderabad Deccan 4-9-54/2, Preetam Nivas Musk Mahal Residential HUDA complex, Hyderabad - 500064 |
