Give heritage status to 150-yr-old memorial PDF Print E-mail

Ajnala.Over 100 youths and elders, led by Shaheed Bhagat Singh Naujawan Sabha, today demanded a memorial on ‘Kalian Wala Khuh’ where the British had killed and dumped bodies of more than 200 Indian soldiers, who had revolted during the 1857 mutiny.

They have also demanded heritage status for the 150-year-old ‘Tehsil Complex’, a protected monument where the British confined these soldiers before killing them. The area around it has been encroached by shops and other establishments. In a function, ‘Pratigya Diwas’, held here in the memory of martyrs, the residents vowed to fight illiteracy, unemployment, drug addiction, and demanded that both the places should be promoted as tourist sites.

Notably, the villagers have erected a gurdwara at the well. “It’s the least we could do as the government is yet to do its bit to preserve these sites,” said Rattan Singh Randhawa, a social scientist.

Shouting slogans, like “Gadari Shaheed Amar Rahen”, they decried the nonchalance of successive governments towards these sites. Jagdeep Singh Mohar, secretary of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Naujawan Sabha, said more than six decades have passed since Independence, but none of the governments have so far done anything to preserve the well. Lall Chand, president of the sabha, said the aim of their organisation was to ensure due honour to these martyrs. “The government should re-name the degree college after these martyrs,” he said.

Freedom fighters, Gursharan Singh Jagdev Kalan, Channan Singh Bhittewad, Diwan Singh Harsha Chhinna, Surjan Singh Chogawan and Swaran Singh Dudrai, also addressed the gathering.

please could any one shed some light as to why we do not look after our historical heritage ie: manuscripts, buildings, photos,. you are doing a great job but i suggest that you should link up with every histotical place or persons who look after these places and start a program to look after our history plus there should be a governing body with no political or personal intrestes.
