50,000 Dollars US grant for Hazrat Jalaluddin Bukharis shrine PDF Print E-mail

Hazrat Jalalud Din BukhariLAHORE: Principal Officer of American Consulate Bryan Hunt on Friday announced a $50,000 grant to conserve Hazrat Jalalud Din Bukhari’s shrine at Uch Sharif. According to a press release, the grant has been issued under the US Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation.

Addressing the grant giving ceremony, Mr Hunt emphasised for preserving “shared global heritages” and said that the exceptional architecture of this 15th century shrine needed to be conserved, not only for devotees, but also for the future generations.

Punjab Auqaf and Religious Affairs Minister Pir Syed Saeedul Hasan Gillani and shrine’s caretaker Makhdoom Syed Sultan Jahanian Bukhari and Bahawalpur district administration members were also present at the ceremony. Earlier, Pakistani and American officials had signed the grant papers.

The project, likely to be completed by September 2008, includes repair of all wooden columns, beams and tile flooring.” The domed brick-built shrine is decorated with glazed blue tiles in floral and geometric designs. The structure, including four other similar monuments forming a compound, is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

In addition to the Uch Sharif shrine, the US Embassy has also funded for conservation of Sirkap Site and Jinnan Wali Dehri in Taxila; Masjid Mahabat Khan and Gor Khuttree in Peshawar; also Pashto manuscripts preservation at the University of Peshawar; Maan Singh Haveli, Rohtas Fort in Jhelum; and the bazaar of the Wazir Khan Mosque in Lahore.
